I am no longer living in Bergen, Norway, but instead in my current hometown of Seoul, South Korea. I have a separate project based blog(Please check the LINKS), which now that I'm not posting anymore on here. therefore to continue this blog under the current title would be meaningless. But if you are interested in what I'm doing now please check Grassroots global outsourcing inc . My upcoming temping office+workstation+agency project with my Norwegian gang Again. This will be part of Mobile Cube and will be curated by Jaejun Lee, the architect-Seoul City Gallery Project with SDO (Seoul Design Olympiad 2008)...

AND another group show for a plastic factory in Incheon in Oct 2008...I'm planning to hire a migrant worker living in Korea to be a one-day DJ. (The worker will actually be a cultural ambassador for three different countries.) This 'ambassador' will receive training and compensation for work as a DJ. He or she will play a compilation of Norwegian music for the opening party of "ID Drawing Gig" at a functioning plastic factory in the industrial port city of Incheon, Korea. Incheon is a symbol of multiculturalism with a history embedded with colonialism and global trade. Within one city exists a strong Korean, Chinese, Japanese, British, and American presence. "The 'ambassador' will introduce the Bergen music, selected by the
artist(from Korea) from her artist residency in Norway, to a Korean audience. All selected music is streamed at the Moroccan Radio Apartment #22 online radio stationunder the title of "Scratching Surface Diving in Deep", co-curated by AnneSzefer Karlsen and Abdellah Karroum."

YES!! I'm back in Seoul. Susan and I went to Thai place in Hongdae-where I live, to have a dinner before we hit the Jjimjilbang-traditional Korean Bath House, called Happy Day Spa. but we were tempted to drink so stopped at loft and hooked up with Juyoen and Doyeon...ended up drinking... I was way too full and drunk to hit the Jjimjilbang in the end but we managed.

My lovely Compliation Music-randomly chosen during my three months residency in Bergen will be streamed soon in Morocco. soooo excited!! here is the link of the Radio Apartment 22-where the compliation will be up. Bergen is surrounded by seven collective mountains, which explains dawn comes late and twilight so early. it seems really long too before sunrise, while the sun itself is still below the horizon.

I met Torbjørn from Roysopp with Heidi at lanmark last wednesday eve.
And had the raw fish -from our fishing trip 10 days ago. i was a bit worried in case one of us might get sick after eating raw fish cos the fish has been frozen for about 10 days and defrosted for about 1day after.... it was still really good and taste!! it means Norwegian fish is really fresh. this time we had proper soya sauce and wasabi sauce. and fresh Korean seaweed as well as slightly pickled radish with vinegar as a Banchan-one of side dishes in Korean cuisine. def they were all perfect combination.

Look at the size of the Norwegian Pollock!! this must be the type of fish mostly used for fish ball, fish buger and salted and dried one ... Pollock must be same as Saengtae in Korea. we often make Saengte chiggae with Garli, Radish, spring onion and chile powder.

First white fish by Kjetil-cod sasimi we had with mushroom sauce(usually we eat with soya sauce) and Korean seaweed, was really good. I really missed Korean gochujang and wasabi sauce for this fresh raw fish...

Hilde is frying-Fish tongue had a bit of flour on and fried with butter and salt.

Hilde invited me for dinner with her friend called Anne and her family. It was the first time I tried fish tongues. The thing I was most happy about was the fish actually came from her father who is sailpr up north Norway..It was really taste!!

You can also see the mashed potatoes, fresh Carrots and fried onions to go with butterly fried fish tongue.

Sure!

We're a couple of activists who started a solidarity group in support of the zapatista rebels in Chiapas, South Mexico. The zapatistas consists of mostly indigenous mountain farmers who rebeled against NAFTA, a north American free-trade aggreement between Canada, USA and Mexico. This was in 1994. The news of this radical uprising spread quickly as the zapatistas was more than usually skilled in the use of internet, and also because of one their main speakers, Subcommandante Marcos. They became quite famous during the riots in Seattle 98, and spread across the world during the next couple of years, much because og The Indipendant Mediacenter and lead singer of Rage Against The Machine, Zach de la Rocha. Google any of these, and you'll find more and better info.

The zapatistas arn't exactely Marxists, socialists, anarchists or anarcho syndicalists - but their politics of solidarity and social community certainly derive from some of these thoughts. And their global supporters include everybody from social democrats to communists to die hard crust-punk anarchists.

Anyway. Coffee is one of the main source of income for the zapatistas. Money earned from coffee production goes directely in to the zapatista community, and helps organize this state within the state.

Our group is the Norwegian part of a large European network of solidaric coffee traders, RedProZapa. We try to inform people about this struggle and the thoughts on international solidarity. Every group from each country brands and sells the coffee under their own name. The Norwegian brand is called Café YaBasta (spanish: "Enough is enough'). The coffee is used as a selling point of information about the movement and also a way of generating money for the zapatists. The coffee is sold ideallistic, witch means that Café YaBasta doesn't earn any money. Most of the income goes to the capitalists involved in the shipment, roasting and grinding of the coffee. The rest goes to the zapatista cooperatives.

Café YaBasta is still a young collective, and has yet only imported about a tonn of coffee, but the German group, Café Libertad, imports about 16 tonns a year. They also sells some of the coffee with a specially high 'solidarity price', which gives them an annual income of about 2 million €. Most of this income goes directely in to a fund which different radical groups or actions can apply to. Last year a striking bike factory occupied by the workers got the fund, and they used the money to start a bicycle cooperative run and controlled by the workers! That's highly unusual in Europe.

We can talk more about this later if you want to. I'll have to work now.

So much wasted land. On the drive back to home-Bergen I notice just the vast landscape of Norway. There is no wasted land in Korea, full of lots of hills and cities. In South Korea, 46 million people are crammed into less than a quater size of Norway.

Still coverd with snow!!

I could post and link more about the local music scenex..but insteads I bring you... the pics from the > Kubuso Museum in Hordaland county. This modern museum is located in a really beautiful, quiet town- just about 30 kilometers north of Bergen. The curator or manger (not sure) was really friendly. He got us to get in for free and explained about the show. Some reason this museum reminded me of the gallery located just outside of Seoul, called Arario in Chunan Korea.. oh yes, its also much like Louisiana Museum in the north of Copenhagen, is located directly on the shore and not far from the city of Copenhagen at all but still built 1 hr away from the city in really quite town again.
The rest of pics are taken from the driving often inside car (still beatuful) from Bergen to 40 Kilometers North Bergen in Norway. This took us about 1 and half hour from the city all together 3hrs but the scale and landcape was So different from the city... I know I was ther not long ago it felt so real when i was there but now it seems so imaginary!!

Both art and science involve moments of discovery, where perception leads to materialisation. This would imply that observation lies at the core of these practices. But what does it mean to observe?

Working as an artist or scientist also means adopting a position with regards to our surroundings: What do we make of what we perceive around us? What makes it worth exploring? How do we order, archive, and narrate what we observe in order to achieve a particular result? How much of our observation is already conditioned or steered by our pre-established means of ordering, archiving and narrating? And how do we respond to the narratives, categorisations and scenarios by which we are already surrounded?

Looking for Observation is a seminar organised by a group of MA students graduating from the Bergen National Academy of the Arts in conjunction with their exhibition Tomorrow’s Parties at Bergen Kunsthall. As the initiators and organisers of this event we share an interest in dealing with the questions of observing and collecting. Though we deal with these interests in disparate ways, the relation between science and emotions, an interest in performative work and forms of storytelling are recurring issues in our work, and provide the starting for this event.

We have invited five speakers and two performance artists in whose practices these issues resonate. In relation to questions around institutions, archives and modes of display, we have invited Markus Degerman, whose work involves 25th direct interventions in the aesthetics of museums, galleries and other discursive spaces. We found an interest in the ideology of images and strategies of rearranging and reinterpreting to be at the core of Ane Hjort Guttu’s artistic practice. Luis Jacob and Ibon Aranberri both called for our attention at last years’ documenta. Jacob’s photo collection Album III triggers networks of narratives through a playful use of visual associations. Aranberri’s installation work cites formal codes as a strategy to discuss ideological issues related to history and politics. Elie During has lately been focusing on the relations between observation and experimentation from a philosophical point of view. In their performances for Looking for Observation, Kurt Johannessen and Polly Gould will refer to forms of representation and narration from the realm of the natural sciences, and apply new narrative layers.

The chosen locations for this two-day event – Bergen’s Bryggens Museum of Cultural History, Museum of Natural History and Kunsthall – invite the speakers and the audience to interconnect the approaches to observation, archiving and narrating that have shaped each of these disciplinary contexts.

Ane Hjort Guttu: How to Become a Non-Artist and other works

Ane Hjort Guttu will connect observation and categorisation to ideology. Her projects investigate and question representational strategies and power structures through analytical essays, image collections, staged photography, or formalist sculptures. She will speak about works that point at the inherent ideologies in such image genres as architecture photography, the portraiture of female artists, and printed matter from the era of social democracy. She will also present works in which she looks at the way objects or images with uncertain meanings may break down established categories and become metaphors for a certain freedom of mind.

Ane Hjort Guttu is an artist based in Oslo. Recent exhibitions include a solo show at Young Artists' Society UKS, Oslo (2007); and the group exhibitions Indifference and Engagement, Galleri Trafo, Asker (2007); Norwegian Sculpture Biennial, Vigelandsmuseet, Oslo (2006); Jump into Cold Water, Shedhalle, Zurich (2005); and Something out of Nothing, Fotogalleriet, Oslo (forthcoming in 2008).

Luis Jacob: Album

Luis Jacob will discuss ‘observation’ and ‘collecting’ through the example of his Album series. Album III is composed of hundreds of images culled from a variety of books, magazines, and other publications. These images are montaged together and hung sequentially in the gallery to form a kind of ‘image bank’. Through processes of association and visual puns, the images of this Album compose extended, even epic, narratives that weave one around the other in a process reminiscent of what Roger Buergel, director of documenta 12, called the “migration of form.”

Luis Jacob is an artist, writer, curator and activist based in Toronto. His recent solo exhibitions include Habitat, Kunstverein Hamburg (2008), Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto (2005-06); Just Do It!, Khyber Centre for the Arts, Halifax (2005); Flashlight, Toronto Sculpture Garden, Toronto (2005); Open Your Mouth and Your Mind Will Follow, travelling exhibition (2005). Recent group exhibitions include Martian Museum of Terrestrial Art, Barbican Art Gallery, London (2008); and documenta 12, Kassel (2007).

Élie During: The Experimental Gaze – Tactics of observation in science and art
When observation is conjugated with experimentation, the first issue that comes to mind is that of observation as construction: scientific experiments are controlled experiences; experimental observations yield constructed facts. But what about the unmediated act of observation in more ordinary circumstances? The writings of William James and Henri Bergson can help us bring to light the experimental nature of attention, considered as a tactic of observation common to the artist and the writer. Attention is not a passive registering of whatever meets the eye: it is a dynamic process, involving the crossing of thresholds and the interplay of different levels of consciousness. In this talk, a whole range of troubling forms of attentive observation (from entoptic vision to paramnesia or ‘déjà vu’) will serve as hints for understanding the projects of contemporary artists involved in creative practices of observation.

Élie During is a philosopher based in Paris. He is professor at the École nationale des beaux-arts in Lyon and is a member of the International Center for the Study of French Philosophy (CIEPFC) at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris. He has published several anthologies (on general philosophy and metaphysics) as well as a book on Henri Poincaré. He is also the editor of Matrix: machine philosophique, a speculative reading of The Matrix. His papers deal with topics such as electronic music, contemporary art and philosophy. His current research focuses on the interplay between art and science.

Ibon Aranberri: Exercises on the North Side

Ibon Aranberri proposes alterations of the iconographical, historical and perceptual meaning of references that form a part of an intensely mediatised common imaginary. His work addresses local specificities and continuities defined by a hermetic nature – ruined forms, now inactive yet still present within collective memory. Through organisational forms such as sculptural diagrams, image-constructions and cartographies, Aranberri generates new responses to pre-established situations. His narrative mechanisms activate processes and conflicts that are always dependent upon the socio-political and cultural conditions of the given place and time, despite being related to more generic and universal imaginaries. Aranberri will speak about Exercises on the North Side, a continuing project in which he engages with the filmic representation of mountains and mountaineering, and their mythological and ideological significance.

Ibon Aranberri is an artist based in Bilbao. Recent solo exhibitions include Integration, Kunsthalle Basel (2007); Baltic Art Center, Visby (2006); The Cave, Iaspis, Stockholm (2005). Markus Degerman: About exhibition design and aesthetics

Markus Degerman investigates what kind of narratives and social scenarios are written into spatial configurations and visual displays. His practice includes (re)designing exhibition settings and modifying environments in public space. His talk will look at exhibition design and the aesthetics of seminars. Partly under the influence of academia and art as research, the phenomena and terminology of the seminar, laboratory and archive have become common features of contemporary art. What value should we attach to these specific artistic forms, and what function could they have in a world in which everyday life itself has increasingly become aestheticised?

Markus Degerman is an artist based in Stockholm, and a member of the design collective Uglycute. His recent exhibitions include Undersöka Form, Nationalmuseum, Stockholm (2008); Home Cinema, Maribel López Gallery, Berlin (2008); Multiple Choices, Oslo Kunstforening (2008); Exteriors, CCA, Kiev (2007); Building Societies, Konsthall C, Stockholm (2007); Opacity, UKS, Oslo (2005); and Gelijk het leven is, S.M.A.K., Ghent (2003). A performance lecture, starting at Naturhistorisk Museum and ending at Bergen Kunsthall

The work of Polly Gould is concerned with our relationships as speaking subjects, exploring questions of voice, power and desire, presented in a live form as performance lectures or performance video works. Her recent work has been particularly concerned with the spatialisation of memory, landscape and mourning. For her performance in Bergen she will conduct an audio tour through the taxidermy display in Bergen’s Natural History Museum, giving a voice back to the stuffed animals and displayed objects, and a right to reply to their spectators, thus challenging the relations between observer and observed.

Polly Gould is an artist based in London. Her recent projects include Peninsular, ICIA, Bath (2008); In the Asparagus Bed (selected for the Jerwood Drawing Prize 2007); and The Alpine Fantasy of Victor B and Other Stories (collection of artists’ stories, 2006). Recent (performance)lectures include Libraries and Landscape, ICIA, Bath (2008); Death and Beyond, ASCA, Amsterdam (2007); and Objects and Narratives, Loughborough University (2007). She also works collaboratively as part of Eggebert-and-Gould on public art commissions and curatorial projects, such the touring exhibition Nature and Nation: Vaster than Empires (2002-03), and Topophobia: Landscape and Anxiety (forthcoming 2008). Kurt Johannessen: The Soap Bubble’s Vanishing Act

Kurt Johannessen relates to scientific experiments and discoveries, quests for truth, as well as the unbelievable and inexplicable, often using pseudo-scientific formats and narratives in his work. From his text works, lectures and performances, he has developed a particular form of lecture-performance. The Soap Bubble’s Vanishing Act emerged from the book Other Discoveries (2007), where it appeared together with 110 other texts. In his performance-lecture, he will thoroughly scrutinize this text, to try to find out how such an occurrence can take place. Working methodologies, the cockroach’s point of view, the Phantom Blot and football are all relatively relevant for this investigation.

Kurt Johannessen is an artist based in Bergen. Warm Fish cake with Arne's home made Bread with a bit of mustard on. One fish cake is about 15 Kr, esp from the shop near fish market is the best fish shop in town( Arne: thanks for the tip!!). I have tried other fish cakes in a various place but they are not as good as the one I had from near fish market shop.

Here is Information about Korean food dishes with free recipes in English I found from Internet the otherday. We had the Japche, Bulgogi and the soup- in bwtn Dwenjang and Miso soup!! the soup was completely diaster with wrong seaweed but was edible!!

Green curry with rice!!

Tom-yam-soup with rice!!
For my first Thai meal in Bergen I and Erlend are decided to check out the new cafe-restaurant behind Legal bar, called Kung-fu cafe(?). I ordered "Tom-yam-soup with rice" (60 kr=12000won) and a Beer (55kr). I love Thai food!! although i never been to Thailand!. where is the bowl for the rice? is this really for dinner or lunch sets? I was a bit disapponted with the taste, price and portion of the food. And my second adventure in Green curry I had with Heidi, was not a curry, more like soup. too much water in the curry and too salty. where are all Green veggies? but we were starving so quickly stuffed at least.

Indoor boots!!
The rainboots for hunter!
I love looking at the way People deal with the weather and create fashion solutions. Wandering the streets of Bergen, I spotted a lot of great examples of rain boots expertly combined with leggings and pants, or with jeans tucked in. High heels are just completely impractical if you are walking anywhere in this weather. Here is what Power wrote the other day "BUY them rain boots! You will never regret it in a million years! ......It is like Seoul in the monsoon season, but forever and never ending...!" its raining again here!!

At Arne's dinner!! All the members from the flaggfabrikken are Great Cook!! Arne cooked the Lamb for 11 of us. he is my boss for three months here in Bergen and amazing cook. The pictures below are from a dinner party of all Flaggis' artists and friends. Lots of fun and discussion that I dont remember (thanks Morten: i know you tried hard to explain all in English). So Nice of you. Eat, eat, and make art (life)! Cook something nice, eat something nice esp during the easter!!

Fiske boller-Dinner #1

This is fish shop near the Fish Market and fish cakes, can find easily in the super market or near by Fish Market in town...This Fish cakes are Korean version of 오뎅, has a considerably different texture and taste. they are pretty warm so you can just buy and eat!!

Anne is Cooking the fiske boller for dinner in her new apartment where i live now!!
This is fiskeboller in A CAN.
The sauce or semi-soup to go with, added with some butter, milk, flour in it!!
Finally it servered with Boiled Potatoes, with some grated crispy carrot on top.

Fiskeboller means fish balls in English. this ball is made of fish, similar to 오뎅 in Korea. This ball is usally eaten with Noodle or with soup in Korea. Not like street food of Korean, this fiske boller is served with very thick creamy Soup, was very filling and tastee. Thanks Anne!!

현재 같이 살고 있는 친구가 주방식탁을 구입하러 간 중고품가게는 노르웨이에서는 Fretex라고 부른다. 이 중고 가게는 구세군(Salvation army), 옥스팜 (Oxfarm)과 같은 역할을 하는 곳이다. 우리가 간곳은 베르겐 중심부에서 벗어난 외곽지에 있고, 차로 가야하므로 현지인의 도움을 받거나 택시를 타고 가야한다. 물론 Fretex는 시내에도 있다. 중고 타자기를 발견하고 기뻐하는 친구 Kari Anne. 타자기는 약 50,000원에 구입했다. 시내보다 외곽지Fretex에 중고품이 훨씬 더 저렴하고 상품이 많다.

주방용품난에서 우연히 발견한 나이프!!
역시 Retro Cafe, 베르겐 시내 중심가에서 북쪽에 위치, 아트센타 바로 앞에 있다. 차도 마시고, 점심도 먹고, 멋진 조명/가구/레트로 접시등 등을 구입할수 있다. 물론 일반적인 중고가게 보다는 비싸지만, 중고가게에서 구하기 어려운 것들이 많다. 특히, 조명/테이블등...Cafe-latte한잔에 6000원 정도, 샌드위치 토스트가 6000-7000원정도다. 중고품 매니아들에게는 적극적으로 추천하고 싶다. 여기서 파는 물건들은 스칸디나비아 지역 스웨덴, 노르웨이 지역 가정에서 주로 썼던 흔적이 보인다.

Is Art so precarious in your city in comparison to other service industry?
Or why Art is so precarious in this service industry?
How Art deploy as "social engagement in your city?
Who are the creative subjects in your city?
Who are the cool creative types in your city?
How artist help with gentrification, urban renewal, the creation of a service economy, labor of affect/emotions.

I know these quetions are Too general But i have some more fun troubling questions after a serious chat with a friend who does think that Artists are often not very self critical... will post more soon.

The city situated btwn a group of mountains as you can see the mountains are everyside of the city.
Bergen Kunsthall (on the right)is one one of the largest institutions in Norway. it has gallery spaces, cafe, video-room and Electronic music Concerts etc. i live very close by.
In the corner of the cafe.
Look this clothes -hanger inside Kunsthall, you will find this pretty much everywhere inside house in Bergen tells the weather!! Bergen is notorious for its rain!!

A glass of beer from the bar/pub is about 50 NOK=10, 000 KRW almost!!

Here is the instant noodle i bought last night from the 24hrs shop. it is 12 NOK=2320 KRW.

Hmm pretty Expensive!! will have to switch to Pasta for an emergency instant food habit-which i often enjoy after drink session!! Btw, what or who is Mr Lee in Norwegian standard on this package?!

스칸디나비안 에어라인 간식-삼각 김밥!! Seaweed triangle roll above. Sas airline's snack from Narita to Copenhagen.

치즈 샌드위치?! and Cheese sandwich you can choose. not bad.
첫번째 식사!! Obviously rice with bulgogi with Japanse style Kimbap-Seaweed roll. Not bad. The "Kiso spring" container is mineral water. Food was great on Korean airline as usual!! and No usual Bibimbap this time either. I took Korean airline to Narita in Japan, Sas airline to Copenhagen in Denmark and Widroe to Bergen in Norway. how many transit zones and Securities did i go through!! gosh!! seemed like endless transfer and transfer!! This wideroe airine i took from Norway was the most scary one but most cozy one tho.

Thanks to everyone who came to my farewell sort of dinner and drinks @greens.eat.gom on monday eve. will update soon with more imgaes on my way to Norway.

@Greens.Eat.Gom(Loft's owners new cafe, serve only Korean foods). We all had Bibimbap, Nurunggitang, Cabbage-Jeon-Korean style pan cake with cabbage, Dak Jim-Marinated Chiken with Potatoes and carotts and Home made Kimchi-Chille pepper cabbage. And the famuse Baik -Kimchi at the Loft with Beers.
